Why are most masks blue?

2021 03/15

Over a year since the new crown epidemic, masks have become a must-have for everyone to go out. I have worn masks for so long. Have you ever wondered why most masks are blue?

Although the masks on the market come in a variety of different colors, such as white, pink, and black, the masks for the Spring Festival Gala are still red with patterns, but the medical staff are basically all blue masks. You don't understand it, it doesn't matter if you don't understand, I understand.

There are many benefits to using a blue mask

The use of blue in modern medical surgical masks does have many benefits. In the early years, the medical masks were white, but later it was discovered that the combination of white coats and white masks reflected too much light under the lights, which easily caused visual fatigue of medical staff and patients.

This piece of whiteness is as pure as heaven...

The use of a cooler light blue for the mask can not only reduce reflections, but also make the color less monotonous, and it is not easy to make people feel impetuous, but it will help calm the mood. In addition, medical staff may have a lot of blood and secretions in the face of various patients. A blue mask stained with blood will not be as conspicuous as a white mask stained, which can reduce the tension in medical treatment.

Also, medical surgical masks are layered. Why do you want to layer? For the simplest example, you have done a urine test before, and you will get it if you are not careful.
Medical staff have to hold it for inspection, if you accidentally get it on the mask...so waterproof mask is very important! The outermost layer of the medical surgical mask is the waterproof layer, and it also has a certain anti-bacterial function (of course, it is strictly for protecting the virus, you must wear an N95 mask), the middle layer has a filtering function, and the inner layer is directly close to the mouth and nose. Since we have divided the front and back, we have to let everyone distinguish it, so the outer layer of the mask is made blue and the inner layer is made white, so that it is not easy to wear it backwards.

Why is the surgical gown also blue or green?

Now that we have talked about the color of the mask, let's talk about the color of the surgical gown. Although some people may have never seen or had an operation, they will know when watching TV shows that the surgical gowns of medical staff are blue or green, which is different from the usual white coats of doctors.

In fact, the white coat as a symbol of doctors does not have a long history. It was only popularized in the United Kingdom at the end of the 19th century. White is easy to get dirty, so doctors must often clean and disinfect the white coat to look clean and tidy. But for surgeons and nurses who perform operations, they often have to deal with red and dazzling blood and internal organs. Splashing on the white coat will cause strong visual stimulation and increase psychological tension. Just look at the white brother in "Working Cell" and you will know how exciting it is.

Let's do a little experiment again. Please stare at the black spot in the center of the left image for at least 30 seconds, and then quickly move your eyes to the black spot in the white area on the right.

What do you see? Did you see a blue-green circle at the point on the right? Even if you close your eyes or blink, it will appear? This phenomenon is called "complementary color afterimage". In other words, if you look at a color for a long time, when you look elsewhere, you will see the complementary color of that color just now. If you look at red for a long time, you will see green elsewhere.

Therefore, later, the surgical gown was changed to blue or green, which can alleviate visual disturbances, reduce the fatigue of the eyes to red, and help maintain the brain's sensitivity to red. ∨So, look closely at your surroundings, everything is so interesting.
